Managing Expectation: KLBYLC

On a beautiful Saturday morning, is the time where most people would imagine themselves tugged in bed and covered in blankets. One must admit that it is an ideal way to spend Saturday mornings. The morning of 26th June 2010 which falls on a Saturday is however not the case for some of the law students at the KDU P.J Section 13.

This is because a pack of young lawyers had made their way to the campus to have a brief talk or discussion among the students. A fair enough number of students had showed up for this considering it was a Saturday morning. The reason behind this event is supposedly to give the students some ideas of what exactly are students getting themselves into when they decide to take up law. Questions on career opportunities and the scope of the job as a lawyer were things that were tackled during this meeting of the students with the lawyers.

Most of the students had probably the same thing in mind when they imagined what it was going to be like once this talk began. The usual one or two speakers talking while everybody kept down quietly listening till Q and A arrives, with one or two questions to be answered before calling it a day. Surprisingly this was not the case. For one thing the event was far from boring. This is perhaps how they had structured it for the students. The students were first split into 5 groups which consisted around 7-10 students per group. Each group was assigned with 2-3 lawyers later on to have a 2 hours discussion on the questions that are still in the mist of law students when it comes to legal careers. Once the 2 hours have ended each group will elect a leader to go up and speak on behalf of the group on whether or not this had been of any help at all.

The thing that made this event not boring was perhaps that the students actually got to know the people that came to talk to them as the discussion was not diluted by a huge number of students. This had given them not only the chance to get useful information from these lawyers but to truly make friends with lawyers who have just kicked start their careers. Some students had even managed to shake off that image of law firms being run by the Devil once things were made clearer by these lawyers.

To sum up this all up is perhaps that it was a rather successful event where by the looks of it a lot of the students had fun while learning something new and perhaps managed to do some networking as well. The students that had participated for this event should give themselves a round of applause for their contribution. In the near future let’s hope that more events such as this would come around.
