Managing Expectation: KLBYLC

On a beautiful Saturday morning, is the time where most people would imagine themselves tugged in bed and covered in blankets. One must admit that it is an ideal way to spend Saturday mornings. The morning of 26th June 2010 which falls on a Saturday is however not the case for some of the law students at the KDU P.J Section 13.

This is because a pack of young lawyers had made their way to the campus to have a brief talk or discussion among the students. A fair enough number of students had showed up for this considering it was a Saturday morning. The reason behind this event is supposedly to give the students some ideas of what exactly are students getting themselves into when they decide to take up law. Questions on career opportunities and the scope of the job as a lawyer were things that were tackled during this meeting of the students with the lawyers.

Most of the students had probably the same thing in mind when they imagined what it was going to be like once this talk began. The usual one or two speakers talking while everybody kept down quietly listening till Q and A arrives, with one or two questions to be answered before calling it a day. Surprisingly this was not the case. For one thing the event was far from boring. This is perhaps how they had structured it for the students. The students were first split into 5 groups which consisted around 7-10 students per group. Each group was assigned with 2-3 lawyers later on to have a 2 hours discussion on the questions that are still in the mist of law students when it comes to legal careers. Once the 2 hours have ended each group will elect a leader to go up and speak on behalf of the group on whether or not this had been of any help at all.

The thing that made this event not boring was perhaps that the students actually got to know the people that came to talk to them as the discussion was not diluted by a huge number of students. This had given them not only the chance to get useful information from these lawyers but to truly make friends with lawyers who have just kicked start their careers. Some students had even managed to shake off that image of law firms being run by the Devil once things were made clearer by these lawyers.

To sum up this all up is perhaps that it was a rather successful event where by the looks of it a lot of the students had fun while learning something new and perhaps managed to do some networking as well. The students that had participated for this event should give themselves a round of applause for their contribution. In the near future let’s hope that more events such as this would come around.

Doughnuts, Anyone?

"Doughnuts for sale! Doughnuts for sale!”
“Only RM 3 for one, tell your friends!”
“Thanks for supporting the law society!”

Shouts like the ones above rang out loudly throughout KDU’s Damansara campus as law students sold J.CO doughnuts at their designated booths. The fundraiser was held on Thursday the 17th of June at 10am and by noon all the doughnuts were successfully sold. Volunteers from the Law Society included Neville, Fiona, Izzat, Sharifah, Cammie, Khyrul, Hanie, Rebecca.

Volunteers were paired up two by two and booths were set up at KDU’s main entrance and at both entrances of and in the cafeteria. Each booth were given 5 dozen doughnuts to sell out of a total of 20 dozen. The tantalizing flavours included J.CO’s speciality sweet Honey Glazed, crunchy Alcapone, Oreo and the scrumptious Tiramisu. The doughnuts were divided between the three booths as well as to the mobile booth.

It began with a good start as the few students hanging around early morning at campus were tempted into buying the delectable doughnuts for a yummy snack before classes, even up to whole full boxes. The lecturers too graciously bought the doughnuts from the mobile booth, headed by Neville and Fiona, who went around to staff rooms to sell. We even had a doughnut dedication from a buyer who requested us to present a set of doughnuts to two ladies at the staffroom who had helped him with some business. Izzat and Sharifah went on to the new campus to finish of the remaining few doughnuts of which they effectively carried out.

All in all, it was a profitable day with Cammie and Hanie 's booth being the most lucrative one as it was strategically stationed right at the entrance. We also had an enjoyable time trying to outdo each other’s doughnut selling strategies and marketing techniques. The Law Society managed to raise a satisfactory amount of money, and we are very much thankful to all those who contributed.

Bon appétit!

Food That Binds People: The Law Society Lunch

On the 25th of March, we held a lunch get-together for all law students. Pizza & finger food were served and everyone gathered at LH2 to chomp, chat and mingle. The prime objective was to introduce the members of Team Neville, to publicize the events for the year and above all to let people know that the Law Society is here for YOU. There was a good turn out and overall, the event was a success.

Flashback In Time: Accounts of Victory

Hey peepz! The blog is finally up and for our very first post, we shall relive the moments that propelled Team Neville to victory in the 2010 Law Society elections. Suffice to say that it was a team effort and after 2 weeks of preparation, Team Neville was ready to kick off their campaign. It was a week spent splashing the team colour - red - around the campus, hanging up banners, posters and handing out flyers, going from class to class promoting our manifesto and literally getting in people's faces to ensure that Neville's name rang loud and clear in everyone's ears. After a successful presidential debate and an even better election, Team Neville triumphed and rose to take the reins of the KDU Law Society. The team motto 'It's All About You' encompasses everything this team stands and works for. It was the driving force behind our campaign and will continue to be the guiding light for as long as the team remains in office.
